Close to 300 fight fans were treated to an evening of heavy hits at the top of the south boxing tournament at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday.
Organised by the Nelson Boxing Association, 10 bouts were held, featuring a large number of local fighters and others from around the country.
The feature bout of the night was the 75kg senior open battle between Sloan Auckram, of Nelson's Fighting Fit, and Gary Waines, from Bells Boxing Gym in Christchurch.
Waines took the bout by an inflated score of 26-12, but Auckram will have the chance for revenge at the Canterbury championships later in the year, helping set the scene for a good rivalry between two of the best middleweights in the South Island.
Perry Soper had an impressive win over Vatau Sionne from Wellington in the 60kg youth novice class, 16-13.
"It was close but he stuck behind his jab, he stuck to the game plan and kept out a strong, powerful boy by just sticking long," Steve Mitchell from Fighting Fit said.
Fighting Fit's Gage Brown continued his buildup towards the youth Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man with an exhibition fight against David Graham from Wellington.
Brown lost, but gave up a significant weight and experience advantage to his opponent, who was a New Zealand junior champion last year.
Brown started tentatively and suffered a bleeding nose early on, but gradually got himself into the fight.
"I was happy with the result, I think he could have been a little bit sharper in the first round, the second round he picked it up, and the third round I think he had good control of the situation," Mitchell said.
Marcus Jones, from Nelson's Clifton Boxing Gym, continued an impressive start to his boxing career with another victory, this time against Keegan O'Kane-Jones from Wellington in the 55kg cadet novice class.
He won 12-9 on points.
Trainer Alan Dickie said he was "absolutely rapt" with Jones' performance, which saw him prevail against a more experienced opponent and after the score was tied going into the final round.
It was hoped the tournament would be held again next year, and the organisers wanted to thank everyone who supported the evening.
