The Tasman Rugby League is set to host a nines tournament which chairman Paul Lafotanoa hopes will become league's answer to union's Wellington Sevens.
The inaugural Prorugby League Nelson Nines will be held at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, March 10, with 11 teams already confirmed starters for the event. Lafotanoa was confident of attracting up to 16 teams for the inaugural tournament.
All six Nelson clubs are competing, with the newly-formed Richmond Rabbits joining the Wanderers Wolves, Stoke Cobras, Victory Vikings, Tahuna Tigers and Motueka Tigers to play alongside Southland's Mataura and Bluff Cooks, Blenheim's Wairau Taniwha and Marlborough Lions and Wellington's Ngati Toa.
"There was no nines event like this in the country and the long-term vision for it really is to become rugby league's version of the Wellington Sevens, with international teams coming eventually and a carnival sort of atmosphere," Lafotanoa said.
"Unfortunately, the timing and short notice meant that some of the North Island teams couldn't come, but I've got no doubt that with the success of this event that next year, we'll have some more teams coming."
The day's activities will also involve prizes for the best fancy dress, bouncy castle and slides, food stalls and a beer tent.
Tasman Rugby League is also organising a Sir Peter Leitch fundraiser luncheon at the Suburban Club on Friday, March 9, starting at 1pm.
